James Barksdale Timberlake

January 12, 1949 — September 30, 2013

James Barksdale Timberlake (Jimmy), 64, passed away Monday, September 30, 2013. He was born in Franklin County, Virginia on January 12, 1949, the son of the late Maxwell W. and Anne Virginia H. Timberlake. He became a citizen of Powhatan County at the age of two. A devoted man of God, husband, father and grandfather, he leaves behind the love of his life for 43 years, Gail Hicks Timberlake. He is also survived by his son, James Barksdale Timberlake II (Jamie) and wife Anne, along with his daughter, Joy Daniel and husband Preston. He was "Poppie" to five grandsons, Trey, Asher, Fischer, Mason and Clayton and one granddaughter, Evelyn. He is survived by one brother, Max, Jr. and two sisters, Betty Anne and Virginia Merle along with their families as well as a longtime, dedicated friend, Larry Jackson (L.J.). Jimmy's faith and his family were the most important things in his life. He was a longtime member of Powhatan United Methodist Church. He was an accomplished agriculturalist, enjoying God's green earth and the fruits of his labor always sharing the harvest with everyone. Service to all was his calling throughout his life. He served his church, his country and community selflessly. He accepted leadership positions in every organization he was part of. In his youth he was a leader in Future Farmer's of America and served as Co-Captain of Powhatan High School Indians football team. His military service totaled 26 years, achieving the honor of Marine of the Year early in his career. The Department of Forestry honored him for 26 years of service-his favorite part was educating youngsters as Smokey the Bear. The community of Powhatan embraced his ability to serve with over 33 years in the Volunteer Fire Department nearly all of them with Powhatan's Finest-Company One. He achieved the status of Lifetime member in Co. #1. He was a volunteer with Beaumont Learning Center for over 19 years of recreational ministry with PUMC. He assisted so many other civic organizations in a multitude of ways it would be a challenge to name them all (such as Scouting, Batteau Festival, Relay for Life, Coalition of Churches, Fighting Creek Park). Service was his spiritual gift. Visitation with the family will be held Friday, Oct. 4, 2013 at Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy. (Rt. 60), Powhatan. Visitations will be 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. A celebration of his life is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 at Powhatan United Methodist Church at 11 am. The church is located at 2253 Rosson Road. Donations may be made in remembrance of Jimmy to PUMC or PVFD Company One.
