John L. Lewis III

John Latan� Lewis, III died peacefully on May 8, 2012. Born March 8, 1938, the eldest son of the late Anne Harrison Shepherd Lewis and the late John Latan� Lewis, Jr. of Williamsburg, Virginia, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of forty years, Elizabeth Macgill Randolph Lewis. Jack was a graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Law School at The University of Virginia. At the University he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon, Eli Banana, The Imp Society, and The 13 Society. He twice served as President of the Student Council, once as a college student and again as a law student. After law school he practiced law in Powhatan County and served as Commonwealth's Attorney for twenty-three years. A member of the Virginia State Bar and the Virginia Bar Association, he also served on the boards of the Elizabeth Randolph Lewis Powhatan YMCA, Southside Electric Cooperative, and Huguenot Academy. He is survived by his four children and their spouses: Anne Harrison Lewis Harris and Chip, John Latan� Lewis, IV and Audrey, Lelia Graham Lewis Webb and Randy, and Elizabeth Randolph Lewis Allred and Jon; and twelve grandchildren: Lauck, Will, and Latan� Harris, Jack, Natalie, and Harrison Lewis, Macgill, Rice, and Graham Webb, and Chase, Warner, and Parks Allred. He is also survived by his two brothers, Shepherd Fitz-Hugh Lewis and his wife Anne Brooke, and Thomas Randolph Lewis, and thirteen nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Jack. Jack was loved and revered for his scrupulous honesty, his singularly tender heart, his unflagging courtesy and his steadfast loyalty. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 14 at 11:00 AM at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 2245 Huguenot Trail in Powhatan. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Elizabeth Randolph Lewis Powhatan YMCA, 2269 Mann Road, Powhatan, Virginia 23139.
