Wright Emmett Terry, Jr.

Wright Emmett Terry, Jr. 92 of Powhatan, formerly of Newberry Florida, went to be with our Lord on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020. He was a kind, gentle, and giving person who never met a stranger. He was born in Keswick, Va on January 21, 1928 the elder son of Wright E. Terry, Sr. and Selma Mills Terry Ferguson. He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Scott Terry, their son Michael Terry, younger brother Raymond Terry, and sister, Shirley Terry Thompson. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Joni Blanton, two granddaughers Jennifer Terry & Melanie Allen (Chris), grandson Michael Paul Terry, all who live in Florida, as well as two great-granddaughters Lila & Violet Allen, also a niece and nephew Laraine & Tom Lumsden of Corby, Northamptonshire, UK, who have visited him often. Wright graduated from the Miller School of Albermarle in 1947, worked a short while as an electrician in Charlottesville before joining the U.S. Navy in 1948. He retired from the Navy as a submariner Chief Petty Officer on the Sea-Cat (CSS399) stationed at Key West Florida. After retiring from the Navy, he carried mail on foot in South Miami Heights, Florida and also retired from the U.S. Postal Service while living there. After his second retirement he and his wife moved to Newberry, Florida. Wright was active in the American Legion Posts wherever he lived, Disabled American Veterans, and the Forty-and-Eight for over 50 years. He had been living with his niece and nephew, Brenda and David Bradley & Family of Powhatan for the last five years and will be truly missed by all who ever met him. A Memorial Service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Powhatan American Legion Post 201 at 2375 Skaggs Road, Powhatan, VA 23139 or Newberry American Legion Post 149 at 26821 W Newberry Rd, Newberry, FL 32669.
