Powhatan

On Friday, September 19, 2025, Calvin Wayne Covert, 75, passed away at his home in Powhatan County, Virginia, surrounded by his close family following a brief but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Calvin was preceded in death by his mother Evelyn Covert, and father Raymond Covert. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret Covert; his daughter, Wendy Plumb, and her husband, Billy Plumb; and his granddaughter, Monica Plumb.

Calvin dedicated his life to service. He spent 27 years as a firefighter with the City of Richmond and later served 15 years as a deputy sheriff with Chesterfield County. In addition, he gave 30 years to the United States Coast Guard Reserve. During his time with the Coast Guard, he answered the call to active-duty multiple times, first during Operation Desert Shield and then again during Operation Desert Storm, when he deployed to Iraq and Kuwait, and later in response to Hurricane Katrina, where he assisted in recovery operations in New Orleans. He concluded his military service with distinction, retiring at the rank of Chief Petty Officer.

In addition to his professional service, Calvin previously volunteered with the Powhatan Volunteer Fire Department, Forest View Volunteer Rescue Squad, and the Metro Richmond Flying Squad. He most recently gave his time to the American Legion Post 201 and the Powhatan Christmas Mother program. In his youth, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, reflecting a lifelong commitment to integrity, service, and community.

Outside of his service, Calvin was a skilled craftsman who loved woodworking, from pen turning to carving and building. His work reflected the same patience, dedication, and care he shared with family, friends, and colleagues.
