Charles Aulden Maney

June 14, 1936 — April 1, 2024

Cumberland

Charles Aulden Maney, 87, of Cumberland, VA, who peacefully passed away on April 1, surrounded by his family. As Charlie ascended to heaven on HIS Easter Sunday, it seemed only fitting for him to embark on his eternal journey with a touch of celestial celebration. He had a habit of keeping his own time - his watch forever an hour behind, perhaps in an attempt to savor every precious moment a little longer.

Known affectionately as the "Log Icon" for over four decades, Charlie's passion for crafting and constructing log homes was legendary. Yet, his devotion to his faith in Christ and his beloved wife of 61 years, Betty Boop, and his family always took precedence. Throughout his life, Charlie's compassionate heart reached far and wide, touching the lives of college students, foster children, extended family members, dreamers, doers and those in need of a helping hand.

Born in 1936 to Walter and Margaret Maney near Bryson City, NC, Charlie's journey was marked by both loss and resilience. With his father tragically lost during WWII in France, Charlie, as the sole surviving son, was given the opportunity to pursue higher education through the GI Bill. Graduating from Appalachian State Teachers College with a degree in Education.  His teaching position at Virginia Southern College introduced him to the love of his life Betty Jo. They embarked on fulfilling careers and a life rich in faith, family, love, and purpose.

Charlie leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, treasured by his devoted wife Betty and their three children: Karen Elswick and husband, RK Elswick, Rusty Maney and wife, Christie Maney and Nicole Maney Robinson. His memory will be cherished by his six grandchildren: Trey Elswick, Amanda Gentry, Charlie Elswick, Jack Elswick, Elijah Maney, and Isabella Maney, and pup, Finn Robinson as well as by his two sisters, Marlee Gilreath and Joyce Wilde.

A celebration of Charlie's life will take place at Shiloh New Covenant Church, 665 Anderson Hwy in Cumberland, Virginia, on Saturday, April 6. The family will warmly welcome friends between 12 and 2 p.m. followed by a service and fellowship directly thereafter.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Charlie's memory may make donations to Dallas Plemmons Ministries (www.dallasplemmonsministries.com), a deeply personal ministry that held a special place in his heart for over 50 years, or donate bibles to the Gideons International (www.gideons.org/donate), continuing Charlie's legacy of spreading the Word of God to all corners of the earth.
