Dorothy Alice (Emerick) McKinley, age 92, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025, in Richmond, Virginia. Born on May 31, 1932, in Glendale, California, she lived a full life that spanned nearly a century and touched many people along the way.
A native Californian, Dorothy spent her early years in southern California where she lived with her family. In 1975, she relocated to Tuolumne County in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Over the next 26 years, she raised her children, worked as a sous chef, and embraced the life of the region.
In 2001, Dorothy moved across the country to Powhatan, Virginia with her husband Tom. This new chapter brought with it fresh adventures as they became active members of an Airstream club. Together they traveled extensively throughout the United States, exploring its majestic landscapes and creating lasting friendships along the way.
Dorothy possessed remarkable talent in quilting, sewing, crocheting, and knitting—arts she passed down to her daughters and granddaughters. She was equally passionate about cooking, and nourished family and friends alike with homemade meals.
A woman of deep faith and spiritual commitment, Dorothy was a devoted member of the Carmelite Order. Her life was rooted in prayer and an openness to God's presence in everyday moments. She gave generously of herself in service to others and found joy in quiet acts of compassion and care.
Dorothy was the beloved wife of Thomas McKinley for 74 years, and the cherished mother of eleven children. She is lovingly remembered by her children: Stephen (Diane) McKinley, Linda L'Hommedieu, James (Katrina) McKinley, Phillip (Rhoda) McKinley, Mary (Barry) Hodge, Kenneth McKinley, Marguerite (John) Brennan, and Diane (Filipe) Moreira. Her legacy continues through her 25 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by three sons: Robert McKinley, Thomas McKinley, and Joseph McKinley.
Her life was a testament to grace through simplicity and strength through faith. Dorothy’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her and were blessed by her presence. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
