Dorothy Marie Davis Mitchell, 92, of Powhatan, passed away Saturday, December 20, 2025. Born in New Canton, September 3, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Leslie Leak and Mattie Sue Dunkum Davis. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Bennie Isaac Mitchell and Edwin “Ned” Micklem-US ARMY, a son, Ronald Benjamin Mitchell, four brothers and spouses, Joseph B. Davis-US ARMY (Alma), Leslie Wilson Davis-US ARMY (Margaret), John Thomas Davis-US NAVY (Eunice) and Benjamin Perkins Davis-US ARMY (Ruby) and three sisters and spouses, Mary Elsie Davis Clements (Edward), Mattie Katherine Godsey (Raymond Harris and William Godsey) and Gracie Virginia Davis (Alton).
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Karen and Kenneth Morton, and her feline companion Fuzzy, four generations of nieces and nephews and many friends. Dorothy at the age of 16 married Bennie who was 27 and moved to Richmond where both of them worked for the American Tobacco Company until the company shutdown in 1981 then she worked at Ukrop’s Super Market on Walmsley Boulevard for several years until she was needed at home to care for Bennie. She loved flowers, cooking, cats, and spending time with family, friends, and being a helping hand if needed. Before her siblings started having health issues, they would have covered dish gatherings with several freezers of homemade churned ice cream. That afternoon into the night they would sing hymns. She was a member of Holly Hills Baptist Church.
Visitation and funeral service will be at Bennett & Barden Funeral Home in Powhatan on Saturday 12/27. Visitation at 11am, service at noon, and graveside service at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Buckingham County at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, take time to enjoy your family or make a donation to a cause close to your heart.
