Ernest Lee McNeil “Ernie” was born on August 17, 1945, in Richmond, Virginia, to Harold and Louise McNeil. He passed away peacefully on July 31, 2026, at the age of 80.

When his country called, Ernie answered. He was drafted into the United States Army on December 28, 1965, and proudly served his nation with honor during the Vietnam era. As an Artillery Mechanic. He continued serving in the United States Army Reserve through 1971. During his military service, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Marksman Badge, and one Overseas Service Bar. His love for his country never faded and remained a defining part of who he was.

Following his military service, Ernie turned his passion for automobiles into a career. He worked for legendary NASCAR team owner Junie Donlavey of Donlavey Racing, building race car frames. It was work that perfectly matched his talent and love of racing.

Ernie was happiest in his workshop, where he could spend hours building, repairing, and tinkering with anything that needed a skilled hand. He loved NASCAR and all forms of racing, and when he wasn’t in the garage, he enjoyed watching classic Western movies and television shows.

Ernie was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia McNabb; his parents, Harold and Louise McNeil; and his lifelong best friend, Wilbur Langford.

He is survived by his devoted friends, Danny Coley and Kristian Rudd; daughter, Wendy Thurman and her husband, Michael; and many other family members and friends who will forever cherish his memory.

Ernie will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering patriotism, remarkable craftsmanship, and generous heart. He lived a life of service, hard work, and integrity. Whether serving his country, building race cars, or creating something in his workshop, he took pride in doing every job well. His legacy lives on in the memories of those who knew and loved him.

A service will be held Fridat Sept. 4 2026 in the Amelia Veterans Cemetery at 3:00 PM, 10300 Pridesville road, Amelia Court House, VA.
