Fred Lyle Shumaker, 80, of Cartersville, Virginia, went to be with the Lord, Saturday October 3, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Otelia Shumaker and four siblings. Fred is survived by his loving wife Tina Shumaker, daughter, Dana; son Jim Bragg (Angie); daughter Melissa Branch (Adrian); grandkids, Josh Woodley, Courtney Winslett (Christian), Alex Sargent, Sami Wheeler (Austin), and Savannah Bragg. Fred was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.
Born in Buckingham County, Virginia, Fred lived a life defined by devotion to family, hard work, service to others, and deep love for the community he called home.
He was deeply involved in his church and community. He gave freely of his time and energy, helping lead organizations such as the Ruritan Club and taking part in numerous local projects over the years. Giving back was not simply something Fred did; it was part of who he was. In many ways, he was a pillar of the small community he loved.
At heart, Fred was an outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing for as long as his health allowed, and cherished time spent outside. He also deeply valued trips with his family. The places he visited with Tina, his children, and grandchildren became treasured memories. Ocean Isle was a favorite destination, and the family shared many happy times there together.
Fred leaves behind a legacy of hard work, generosity, loyalty, and love. He believed in doing things the right way, taking care of his family, helping his neighbors, and putting his whole heart into the things that mattered. Those who knew him will remember not only what he accomplished, but the kind of man he was and the steady presence he provided to so many.
His family will carry his stories, his lessons, his stubbornness, his kindness, and his example with them for years to come.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 7, 2026 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Cartersville Baptist Church, 25 High Street, Cartersville, VA 23027. Celebration of Life will be held at Cartersville Baptist Church on Thursday, October 8, 2026 at 1:00 PM. Following the Celebration of Life, a Graveside Service will be held. Afterward, family and friends are invited to return to the church for a meal and time of fellowship.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to Cartersville Baptist Church.
