It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Donald Bray, 92, of Powhatan. Don passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.
Don’s greatest pride was his large family. He was a loving husband of 63 years to his devoted wife, Brenda—a father, a doting grandfather, great-grandfather, and a true role model.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lessie. He is survived by his beloved wife, Brenda; five children: Robin, Richie, Rory (Helena), Stephanie, and Suzi (Shannon); 13 grandchildren: Justin, Jessica, Brad, Matt, Tyler, Tori, Sierra (Jared), Kellyn, Meghan, Madalyn, Andrew, Brayden, Carter, and Paisley; and seven great-grandchildren: Jayden, Noah, Mason, Jasper, Emma, Hunter, and Scottie.
Don was a graduate of John Marshall High School, class of 1950, and went on to study business at the University of Richmond, graduating in 1955. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army and Army Reserves, serving for 20 years and retiring as a Captain in 1973.
Don worked as an executive at Dominion Virginia Power, where he retired after 32 years of service.
He loved cars—especially Mustangs—and was passionate about sports. He coached his children and supported his grandchildren in all their youth leagues, especially baseball. He was an avid fan of the Richmond Spiders and never missed a home basketball or football game.
Don was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer for several years and participated in various committees, including the John Marshall Cadet Corps.
A visitation will be held at Bennett & Barden Funeral Home in Powhatan on Monday, July 28, at 12:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. A burial service will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery in Fredericksburg on Tuesday, July 29, at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Don’s family asks that donations be made to the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation at www.askccf.org in honor of his granddaughter, Paisley.
