John Joseph Peterson

John Peterson, 61, of Cumberland, Va, passed away on August 7th, 2026.

John was born on February 13th, 1965 in New York, NY to Edgar and Maureen Peterson. He was a beloved son, sibling, father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

John spent his earlier career days volunteering with the Hawthorne Fire Department in New Jersey and went on to work as a telecommunications engineer with Verizon.

He was known for his humor and lighthearted camaraderie as well as helping those he cared about. John especially enjoyed building projects, using power tools, and planning for any opportunity life threw at him.

John was preceded in death by his father, Edgar Peterson.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Victoria, Nicole, and Matthew Peterson along with his daughter-in-law Dakota, his granddaughter Claire, his mother Maureen; his brother Michael & wife Bernadette; his sister Maureen & husband Andy; and many neices, nephews, and loving friends.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the team at Passion Community Church for their love and support over the past month.

A funeral service will be held at a future date in New Jersey to honor John and his time with the fire department.

John will be remembered for always putting others first and caring about the people he loved.

John may be gone from our sight, but his love, laughter, and memory will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
