Joyce Eleanor Bunn Evans, 95, of Powhatan, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026. She was a good human – kind, competitive, welcoming, and thoughtful – who loved her family like no other.
Born on February 1, 1931 in Miami, Florida, Joyce lived a full life. As the oldest of four children, she excelled in school while playing basketball and working at the ice cream fountain in Blossburg, PA. She married Raymond Evans in 1950 and lived on the family farm in Ogdensburg, PA. The family moved to Buffalo, NY for work with Greyhound Bus Lines, and later to Powhatan, Virginia in 1963. She was happy to leave the snow and cold behind with that move.
As a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Joyce played the organ, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and led the Altar Guild. She cultivated a large vegetable and flower garden often using her own flowers for the altar. Joyce loved her church and the people in it. She always greeted new churchgoers with a loaf of her fresh homemade bread.
In 1974, Joyce went back to school to pursue her Licensed Practical Nurse Certificate. She worked in service to others for many years as a med nurse for Retreat Hospital. After retiring she cared for a number of people from St. Luke’s and the community in their final years. Joyce was a dedicated blood donor who donated gallons of blood in her lifetime.
Long before GPS, Joyce and Ray traveled the United States and Canada with an atlas and a sense of adventure, taking on whatever the road brought them. They often included any family who could get away for a month or so. They traveled by motorcycle or RV and enjoyed camping regularly. Most of their grandchildren have fond memories of amazing road trips!
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Evans, and son, Eugene Evans.
Joyce is survived by son, Keith (Suzanne) of Nokesville; daughter, Debra E. Upson (Barry Cowardin) of Powhatan; daughter, Dawn E. Lipscomb (Dale) of Louisa; Pauline Nimmo (Richard); and longtime friend, Bob Searle. Her brother Roger Bunn (Susan) still resides in her hometown of Blossburg, PA.
Joyce was Mema to ten grandchildren, Elizabeth (Dennis), Adam (Kathryn), Joshua (Jodie), Coleman (Misty), Zachary (Katherine), Jessica, Cameron (Katharine), Daniel, Pamela (Patrick) and Rebecca as well as 15 great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 27th at 1 p.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church (2245 Huguenot Trail, Powhatan, VA). Family and friends are invited to remain at the church immediately following the service for a reception and time of visiting.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 2245 Huguenot Trail, Powhatan, VA 23139 or by donating blood.
