Philip Lowery, Jr., 99, of Powhatan, died November 4, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Dorothy Lowery, his brothers, Warren, Charles and Thomas, and his loving wife of 62 years, Barbara S. Lowery. He is survived by his children, Susan Privett (Bill), Sandra Webster, Phil Lowery (Lisa); grandchildren, Heather, Matthew, Megan and Chessa; great grandchildren, Amara and Joseph, and several nieces and nephews.
Philip was an auto mechanic most of his life. He served as a sergeant in the motor pool of the Army National Guard from the early to mid 1950’s, and later, with his brother, opened the Powhatan Motor Company. Years later they had to relocate and opened Lowery Brothers Exxon and Sporting Goods. He loved hunting and has spent many cold mornings sitting in a tree stand waiting for that perfect shot, but he loved fishing the most. It didn’t matter where or when, he was always happy when he was casting that bait, hoping to reel in the big fish. Philip loved having a vegetable garden every year. He would always plant way more than needed so that he could give the vegetables to all his friends and neighbors. He never met a stranger, loved telling life stories and having a good conversation.
The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 pm on Tuesday, November 10, at Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Hwy., Powhatan, VA 23139. His funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, November 11, at May Memorial Baptist Church, 3922 Old Buckingham Road, Powhatan, VA 23139. Interment will follow in Powhatan Community Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation, in his memory, to the American Cancer Society.
