Richard O'Neil Atkinson, 79 of Powhatan, passed away April 18, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was the beloved son of the late Harry Wilson Atkinson, Sr. and Eva Helen O'Neil Atkinson.
A proud graduate of Huguenot High School, Richard went on to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps, a role he carried with pride throughout his life. He later built his career as a commercial realtor and broker, where his natural ability to connect with people set him apart.
Richard was a man who truly never met a stranger. He was known for his quick wit, unforgettable sense of humor, and the nicknames he lovingly gave to those around him. Generous to his core, he would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. No matter the circumstance-even in life's lowest moments-Richard would always say, "everything is great," a reflection of his resilience and unwavering outlook on life.
He had a deep passion for golf, family and working around his farm. He found his greatest joy and peace at his beautiful cottage on the river in Deltaville-a place where countless memories were made with family and friends.
He is survived by his sisters, Eva Stuart and Martha McAloon, and his brothers, Harry Atkinson Jr., John Atkinson, Tommy "Tiger" Atkinson, and Robert Atkinson.
He also leaves behind his loving children: Brittany Kersch and husband Sean Kersch, Meghann Hedgepeth and her husband Trevor Hedgepeth, Stacie Hartless, and Cameron Crossman along with
Richard was a proud grandfather to Dylan, Peyton, Kendall and Audrey Dolan; Conner, Harrison and Harper Hedgepeth, and Taylor and Kaelyn Hartless. He was also a great-grandfather to seven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life.
He also leaves behind his best friend, Ellie Mae.
He will be remembered for his unwavering love of family, his service to his country, his generosity, and the laughter and light he brought into every room.
To honor Richard's life, and his love for Belize, the family kindly asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Cross Point Village Belize through Mt. Victory Baptist Church. Belize Mission ' Mt. Victory Baptist.
In keeping with Richard's wishes, the family requests guest to wear soft, colorful pastels in celebration of his life and the joy he brought to others.
A service will be held at 1655 Dorset Road, Powhatan on Saturday May 2, 2026 at 4:30pm.
