Ruby Lillian Mewborn Jones Harper

Ruby Lillian Mewborn Jones Harper passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at age 94 in the home of her daughter, Gayle Jones Wood, in Powhatan, VA.  Ruby was a native of Greene County, NC, and born in Hookerton, NC with her twin sister, Ruth, to Raymond and Lila Johnson Mewborn on August 28, 1929.  She was a graduate of Hookerton High School and a longtime member of Rainbow United Methodist Church where she took pride in her crafts, cheese straws and chocolate fudge at the church auction for many years.  Ruby cherished her role as a wife, mother, grandmother/great grandmother (aka Gigi).   After moving from her home in Snow Hill, NC, she moved to Heritage Elite in Kinston, NC, for several years.   After an illness, she moved in with her daughter into Powhatan.  

Ruby was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Lester Jones, and her youngest son, Raymond Jay Jones, her parents, sisters, Louise Spence and Grace Shackelford of Kinston, NC, her twin sister, Ruth Clifton of Raleigh, NC, and her second husband, Charles Harper of Snow Hill, NC.  She is survived by her oldest son, Bob Jones (Pat) of Snow Hill, NC., daughter, Gayle Jones Wood of Powhatan, VA, two granddaughters, Jen Wood Johnson (Chip) of Powhatan, Mary Lillian Jones Dementev of Snow Hill, one grandson, Jayme Wood (Stefanie) of Powhatan, seven great grandsons, Jay Bew, Baylor and Cutler Johnson, Jameson, Ryker, and Dempsey Wood, Teddy Dementev, and one great granddaughter, Teagan Johnson.  Her stepchildren are Charlie and Kathy Harper of NC.  And, many nieces and nephews and dear family friends including a very loyal friend, Vicky Wise.  Her dedicated and amazing caregivers for over two years were Gloria Frye, Ebony Ross, Gina Downes, and Julia Farmer.  The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Gloria Frye, Personal Touch LLC, and Hospice of Virginia for the kindness and care shown to Ruby in her final days.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.  Her final resting place will be with her first husband and son at Pinelawn Memorial Cemetery in Kinston, NC.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Rainbow United Methodist Church, Snow Hill, NC.   Arrangements for the Wood Family are under the care of Bennett & Barden Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Powhatan, VA.  Online condolences may be made to bennettbardenfh.com
