Powhatan

Sherrell Elizabeth Baroody Sherron passed away on November 8, 2023 at age 79 surrounded by her loving family at her home in Powhatan, Va. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, James Lee Sherron, three daughters and their husbands, Stacey & Mike Marks, Christine & Seth Markowitz, and Heather & Dr. Justin Hollon; six grandchildren, Katherine, James, Porter, Graham, Sophia, and Clayton; and two twin great grandchildren Elizabeth & Liam.

Born in Richmond Virginia on October 28, 1944, Sherry was the first of five children of Alfred and Elizabeth Baroody. She is survived by her siblings, Linda Chaffin (Tom), Chris Baroody (Joyce), Dr. Judith Baroody (Dr. Richard Krueger), and Brandon Baroody (Sandy). She graduated from John Marshall High School in 1963 where she was the chaplain for Quintus Stella Sorority. She met the love her life, James Lee Sherron, at the sorority beach week and they married in April 1966. They both attended Richmond Professional Institute, now VCU, graduating one year apart. She received her BS degree in Psychology and later earned a Master’s degree in Special Education.

Sherry began her career as a Special Education teacher in 1973 in Chesterfield County Virginia. Her students meant the world to her and she remembered them fondly throughout her life. She taught at Curtis, Robious, and Crestwood Elementary schools and Swift Creek Middle school. In 1992 she became the Instructional Specialist for Learning Disabilities for the county, she retired in 2005. Throughout her career she remained a loving wife, mother, aunt, niece, cousin, and big sister, planning yearly family beach trips, hosting extended family gatherings, and providing support and counsel to all whenever needed.

Sherry’s love of learning led her to travel with Jim throughout the world. She climbed the Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, held a piranha in her hand at Puerto Maldonado in the Amazon, and explored the pyramids in Egypt. She was drawn to water, flowers in the breeze, heights with great views, and always enjoyed sunrises and sunsets in every destination. In retirement, she continued to serve her community as a volunteer at the Clothes Closet of Powhatan, and a member of the Women’s Club. She traveled often to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to visit the lighthouses. Her favorite hobbies were painting, collecting shells, fishing, and playing bridge with friends. Above all, she cherished spending time with her family.

Sherry will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. The family will receive friends at Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Highway, Powhatan, VA on Sunday November 19, 2023 from 1:30 to 3:30.
