Wallace Leverette Schaefer

Powhatan

Wallace Leverette Schaefer, 91, of Cumberland, VA, passed away peacefully, at home surrounded by his family, on June 20, 2025. He was born on August 21, 1933 in Calhoun County, Alabama.

Wallace was united in marriage on June 8, 1957, to Dorcas Moyer Alderfer and they recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. He was a dedicated family man, husband and wonderful Daddy. He was a farmer for most of those 68 years. He was a very creative and self-sufficient man. He was a poet, an artist, and an avid gardener. It seemed he could do most anything he set his mind to, and he did it well. Church work has always been a priority for him. Wallace moved his young family to Powhatan, VA in 1963 and helped start Powhatan Mennonite Church. He was a Sunday school teacher, Bible School Superintendent, youth leader, assistant pastor and song leader. He served the church faithfully with love.

Wallace is survived by his wife, Dorcas Alderfer Schaefer; daughters, Patricia Nice (Larry) of Powhatan and Carol Landis (Glen) of Cumberland; grandchildren, Benjamin Nice (Melissa), Matthew Nice (Kendall), Nathan Landis (Allison), Timothy Nice (Anna), Luke Landis (Lisa), Marie Jones (Justin), Paul Nice (Audrey-Kate), Dawn Miller (Duane), James Nice (Megan), Anna Landis, Jesse Landis; 34 great-grandchildren; he was a beloved "Uncle Wally" to many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his twin brother, William Emanuel Schaefer (Bertha), who will sorely miss him; as well as brother in-law, Ed Good. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Carl and Bessie Mae (Hahn); infant daughter, Karen Joy; brother, Robert Carl Jr. and Leona Schaefer; sister, Gloria Mae Schaefer Good.

A service will be held in his honor on Thursday, June 26th, 2025 at The Powhatan Mennonite Church, 3540 Old Buckingham Road, Powhatan, VA 23139. A viewing will be held at 10:00 am and the service at 11:00 am in the church. A graveside service will be held immediately following the church service with a luncheon to follow.
